Markelius achieved international recognition with his design for the Swedish Pavilion at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. His own home in Kevinge, a low-roofed, sprawling villa among rocks and trees, became a prototype for informal, “site-conscious” houses throughout the world.

National museum has several of Josef Frank’s textile patterns in the collections. “Navigare” designed by Josef Frank as a tribute to Estrid Ericson’s husband Captain Sigfrid Ericson. Countless times Sigfrid brought the ship m / s Gripsholm into the New York harbor, just as the beautiful vessel is seen in the central image field of the pattern. Around eight ships from previous centuries are heading towards their destinations. It was at m / s Gripsholm that Estrid and Sigfrid met for the first time. The pattern was used to printed in blue, but in green and brown are extremely rare. A design by Josef Frank always bears the designer’s decorative signature of whimsy and warmth.

Overall dimensions are 77 inches high by 50 inches wide including printed selvedge.
Along the top is a stitched 4 inch curtain rod pocket and along the bottom is a folded and sewn 3 inch hem.
Please note the presence of some water stains which are mainly visible from the backside. We have not attempted any cleaning.

Hand screen-printed on a cotton linen blend, ‘Pythagoras’ combines wide bands of spectrum yellow triangles with narrower bands in white, black, and grey. Requiring eighteen unique screens to print, the pattern presents a challenge for even a skilled team of printers, as the narrow gaps between several of the triangles in this length reveal. Markelius incorporated it in several building designs in the early 1950s, including the Royal Institute of Technology Assembly Hall in Stockholm.

Sven Markelius (1889-1972) was an architect and designer firmly rooted in Functionalism. Very early on he made contact with Walter Gropius at the “Bauhaus School” in Dessau. He had an interesting career and during the dynamic decade 1944-54 he was the director of the town planning department in Stockholm. He also designed “Folkets Hus” by Norra Bantorget,
one of the Hötorg-houses and the “Sweden-House” by Kungsträdgården.
